BWH has been named a winning hospital of the Solucient 100 Top Hospitals:Cardiovascular Benchmarks for Success. Presented annually, the award recognizes hospitals that are setting benchmark levels of performance for cardiovascular services throughout the nation based on the Solucient 100 Top Hospitals: Cardiovascular Benchmarks for Success study.
“Our recognition as a benchmark setting hospital in cardiovascular services reflects the talent, hard work and dedication of each of the wonderful people who work here. It is a remarkable distinction for BWH, and I offer my sincere gratitude for your continued efforts to make our hospital one of the very best places to receive cardiovascular care in the nation,” said Gary Gottlieb, MD, MBA, BWH president.
The Solucient 100 Top Hospitals: Cardiovascular Benchmarks for Success –2002 study identifies the top hospitals in the United States based solely on empirical findings from publicly available performance data. Hospitals are assigned to one of three peer groups –Teaching Hospitals with Cardiovascular Residency Programs, Teaching Hospitals without Cardiovascular Residency Programs or Community Hospitals – and scored relative to other hospitals in their group based on seven key measures of clinical quality practices and efficiency of operations. These measures include procedure volume threshold, risk-adjusted medical mortality, risk-adjusted surgical mortality, risk-adjusted complications index, percentage of CABG patients with internal mammary artery use, severity-adjusted average length of stay, and wage- and severity-adjusted average cost. The study ultimately seeks to provide guidelines to improve the standard of care in cardiology.
“We, as a Cardiovascular team strive daily, whether it be in the operating room, the cardiac catheterization laboratory, the patient care units or the research labs, to improve the quality of care given to each and every patient that comes to Brigham and Women’s Hospital. Hard work and dedication as a team accounts for this award. There is not a more talented group of cardiovascular specialists providing patient care, education and research in the entire country,” said Lawrence H. Cohn, MD, chief, BWH Division of Cardiac Surgery and BWPO chair.
“This recognition and achievement acknowledges the high level of quality care that is provided and expected at BWH. It reflects not only our commitment to the excellence of care on a local patient-by-patient basis, but also to the research findings generated at the Brigham that are changing the practice of cardiovascular medicine worldwide. I am proud of my colleagues’ efforts and innovations to obtain such an honor. I take great pride in our team’s exceptional delivery of care to the cardiovascular patients in our neighborhood, region, nation and around the globe,” said Peter Libby, MD, chief, BWH Division of CardiovascularMedicine.
